Driving Sales, One Sample at a Time

Sample packaging, trial sizes, and unit dose packages create personalized consumer experiences that give brands a marketing edge.

Sample packaging for beauty, personal care, and fragrances does more than lower consumer barriers for trying a new product. They create ROI by earning new customers, improving brand loyalty, and potentially driving years of repeat purchases.

Jorge Garcia, President, North America and Global CFO at Arcade Beauty, comments on the sampling market in beauty and fragrance. He says it is in recalibration mode, with an emphasis on brands designing programs with purpose. “Brands are being more deliberate, moving toward more intentional, personalized, and utility-driven approaches,” he says. “At the same time, brands are increasingly using sampling to showcase and differentiate their products in more innovative ways. We’ve seen a clear move toward premium samples with elevated formats and finishes. These carry a more targeted, on-purpose message rather than a generic ‘try me’ moment.”

Sampling Delivers Benefits

Prestige products with prestige pricing represent a higher barrier for trial. These make sampling methods that offer consumers an authentic first impression more compelling.

“Together, this gives brand partners the freedom to choose or combine various sampling solutions. The sampler has to fit their product’s category, texture, and story—whether it’s a spritz-and-go fragrance discovery or a multi-step skincare regimen. At the same time, maintaining a consistent brand experience from sample to shelf is important,” explains Garcia.

Arcade Beauty offers a broad portfolio of technologies and wide range of formats. This allows brands to deliver sample textures and formulations with the same fidelity as their full-size fragrance and color cosmetic products. One of the company’s latest developments is ThermoShade. The pressed powder sampling technology is engineered to deliver a true-to-product experience across eyeshadow, blush, bronzer, and highlighter.

Arcade Beauty’s ThermoShade pressed powder sampling technology is engineered to deliver a true-to-product experience.

“Pressed powder has always been one of the more difficult formats to sample authentically. ThermoShade was built to close that gap. It replicates the look, feel, and performance of the retail product rather than a stripped-down approximation,” Garcia explains.

The format supports full-face application. It can be configured for single- or multi-use, giving brands the flexibility to shape the sampling experience around a specific launch or program.

Buying a full bottle of a new scent can be a pricey investment. Sampling the actual juice gives consumers the chance to put a scent through a personalized wear-test. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to sample fragrances that don’t involve spending hours spritzing scents onto paper test strips.

“Samplers give customers a great, low-stakes way to experience a scent throughout the day. There’s no pressure of a blind buy,” says Sarah Orlowicz, Brand Marketing Specialist, Coverpla. “When someone can test the longevity of a fragrance first-hand, it cuts down on buyer’s remorse. It also reduces the hassle of returned full-sized bottles.”

Fragrance Scented Labels from Samplex Technologies feature actual fragrance oils supplied by the brand sealed between a two-ply label. The top layer is peeled back, exposing the fragrance for direct application to the skin. Although the product is designed as a single-use sample, the top layer can be put back down to re-release the fragrance at a later time.

Jim McNeil, CEO, Samplex Technologies, explains that the labels can be configured to include multiple fragrances side by side with no cross-contamination. Because no alcohol is used in the process, there are no shipping restrictions.

Once filled with fragrance oil, labels are affixed to custom-designed and printed cardstock (FSC material is available). These can be easily handed out at events or included in cross-product sample distribution campaigns.

Multi-Use Sample Packaging for Fragrances

For fragrances that benefit from multiple-use sampling, Coverpla offers a range of bottles. They are available in 2.5 to 15ml sizes, with snap-on, screw-on, and crimp-style pumps.

The company’s newest sampler bottle is the 10ml Boston. Set to launch this fall, the tall, rectangular bottle with a square base and screw-on pump is refillable.

“As the fragrance industry evolves, curated discovery sets have solidified their place as an essential packaging strategy for many brands,” says Coverpla’s Orlowicz. “Ultimately, a well-executed sample set is one of the smartest ways for a brand to build trust. These sets can turn curious first-time buyers into loyal, returning customers.

This spring, Coverpla’s team in Italy worked with Malva 1979 to launch an elegant discovery set. It includes nine fragrances using Pocket 10ml sampler bottles.

The Pocket bottle is a sophisticated premium 10ml molded glass bottle. It has a high-performance, click-on matte black pump paired with a matching cylindrical cap.

Orlowicz says the Malva 1979 packaging was customized using high-precision screen-printing directly on both the glass bottle and the cap. This creates a seamless and premium tactile experience that is the perfect counterpart to Malva 1979’s full-sized 100ml bottles.

Anisa’s new Multi-Level Retractable Brush.

The compact, Multi-Level Retractable Brush is new from Anisa International. It combines three shapes into one retractable brush for professional-level artistry on the go. An enclosed design keeps the brush protected and hygienic. A unique twist technology transforms the brush profile, enabling consumers to customize it to their needs.

The brush is housed in a highly customizable PETG outer component. Consumers can twist the bristles up to a convex position, stay flat in the original position, or make them concave in the lowered position. This feature makes it ideal to apply different product formulas, in addition to powders.

Skincare and haircare treatment products often benefit from sampling to drive home formula benefits.

“Try before you buy is still a consumer mantra that’s always worked in this space,” comments Doug Rofheart, Senior Sales Executive, JP Packaging, LLC. “How does it feel, smell—and how does it work with my skin or hair? These are important questions for the brand and the consumer.”

JP Packaging specializes in flexible packaging sachets for thin and viscous personal care liquids such as creams. The company also fills tubes, thermoform bubble blisters, and deluxe samples like mini jars and dropper bottles.

Rofheart reports a continued demand for sachet packaging formats. These are popular not just for sampling, but also for some products. These include two-ounce hair mask formulations in sachets packed in retail cartons that go right to the shelf. “And in the high-end skincare space, having exact-dosed sachet regimes keeps consumer compliance and a better overall performance of the product,” he says.

Larger Pouches & More as Sampling Evolves

Zacros America specializes in flexible packaging for liquid products ranging from sample sachets to larger flexible pouch formats. One of the company’s newest innovations for beauty and personal care sampling is NIf (Non-Interactive Film). This proprietary flexible film is designed to minimize interactions between packaging and product formulations. According to Satomi Guzman, Marketing Manager and Sustainability Lead, NIf offers glass-like protection that helps preserve fragrance, active ingredients, and overall formula integrity.

“While brands often focus on protecting products from external factors such as light and moisture, preventing interactions between the product and packaging is equally critical. This is especially true in small sample formats where package-product interactions are amplified,” she says. “In a sachet containing only a few milliliters of product, a much greater percentage of the formulation is in contact with the film compared to a larger pouch or bottle. As a result, ingredient adsorption, fragrance loss, or package-product interactions can have a more noticeable impact on product performance.”

NIf was developed to help address these challenges. It is especially suited for beauty samples, sheet masks, unit-dose products, and other small-format packaging applications.

Guzman goes on to say that Zacros expects beauty sampling to continue evolving beyond traditional sachets. Brands are looking for ways to forge more compelling consumer experiences. “While traditional single-use sachets continue to play an important role, we are seeing growing interest in small-format flexible pouches. These are ideal for sampling, travel-size products, discovery kits, and promotional programs,” she says. “As consumers become more selective, brands are looking for ways to give consumers more time to experience a product before making a purchasing decision.”

To support this trend, Zacros offers small, spouted pouch formats. These allow consumers to evaluate a product over multiple uses rather than a single application.

Products packaged in sample size formats are ideal for travel (not to mention breezing through TSA).

Icons America has expanded its travel-sized packaging solutions across all product categories to meet evolving trends. “Today’s consumers are looking for travel-friendly products that deliver the same functionality, convenience, and aesthetic appeal as their full-size counterparts,” says Marianna Cilauro, the company’s VP of Sales and Marketing. “Travel should be all about ease, and products that are practical and ‘carry-on’ friendly are what customers are seeking.”

Icons America’s newest collection of mono-material PE tubes features flip-top caps. They come in five fun shapes, offering both sustainability and functionality. Recyclable and available with PCR, they are compatible with a wide range of formulations, providing versatility for various product applications. A convenient flip-top design enhances ease of use. It also eliminates the risk of misplaced caps, making them an ideal choice for consumers on the go.

For brands seeking travel-sized packaging that mirrors their standard-sized sibling, Icons offers a compact 30ml flip-top PET jar. It has a PP cap, and the design matches its full-size 250ml jar. The accessible design features an extended lid tab that enhances usability with easy, intuitive opening.

Liquid spray products can also be packed securely in Icons’ 50- and 80ml slow-release sprayer bottles with flush fit overcaps. The slow-release sprayer delivers a fine, gentle mist with a smooth, continuous flow. This sleek packaging solution is ideal for sunscreen, body, and hair mist formulations.

Beauty Sample Solutions is making it easy for brands of all sizes to create pro-level samples.

And finally, Beauty Sample Solutions may be one of the newest sample packaging providers in the beauty market. This fall, it will debut with a key point of difference: giving brands of all shapes and sizes access to professional-quality product sampling.

“Sampling has become table stakes for discovery. And it’s the indie and emerging brands driving the growth. But, high minimums, costly buy-ins, and slow quote cycles kept professional sampling a big-brand tool. That’s the gap we’re built for,” explains Chris James, the company’s President & Co-Founder. “Our read is simple: sampling is moving from a big-brand privilege to an all-sizes standard. Technology is what unlocks it.”

James says Beauty Sample Solutions focuses on single-dose sachets and packets. These are ideal for skincare, haircare, and personal care products, with a broad range of viscosities. The company pairs a self-serve ordering platform with its own turnkey production. Brands supply the bulk, and they print the film, fill, seal, run QC (including microbiological testing). The company ships from their Dallas facility.

“Our real edge is access. Minimums start at 1,000 units instead of the usual 10,000–25,000. We offer clear online pricing, one vendor for the whole run, and a Certificate of Analysis on every order,” he says.

Samples are the ‘Hardest-Working Dollar in the Budget’

Of everything a brand can spend money on, James feels product samples may be the hardest-working dollar in the budget. “Putting the actual product in a customer’s hand converts in a way advertising can’t. Shoppers are far more likely to buy after trying a sample than after seeing an ad. Beauty sampling campaigns have driven purchase intent north of 75% and double-digit sales lifts,” he says. “A sample doesn’t ask the customer to imagine the product. It lets them experience it—and experience is what turns discovery into a sale.”

For products like tooth whiteners, anti-wrinkle treatments and skin serums with complex or sensitive ingredients, glass swabs offer a professional-level, non-reactive unit-dose solution.

James Alexander has been filling glass swab packages for more than 50 years. Carol Gamsby, Director of Sales, says hermetically sealed glass ampoules not only help extend shelf life, but they also nullify compatibility and stability issues.

“Our single-use glass swab package works for so many of our customers. It not only has no compatibility issues with some of the harshest chemicals, but it extends shelf life, provides tamper-evidence, and can protect sensitive formulations from environmental exposure,” she says, noting that products that have thin, liquid consistencies work best in the format.

Brands can customize the size of the ampoule (from 0.5- to 1.6mls), the glass swab, and the over cap. Or, choose a different tip and add a personal touch with decoration.

The company also offers injection-molded plastic ampoules with a unique web feature for single-handed squeeze dispensing.
